Yum: Cherry Blossom Cookies

cookies1.jpg

Well, sugar cookies shaped like cherry blossoms anyway. My friend and I decided to try out my new cherry blossom shaped cookie cutters to make these delicious treats.

cookies2.jpg
That's me getting covered in flour while rolling and cutting the dough into cute blossoms.

A closer shot at the shape of the raw dough.

cookies4.jpg
I'm smiling at these cookies because I managed not to burn them. They are happy survivors.

cookies5.jpg
Oh wow, they puffed up so big!

cookies6.jpg
I decided to recut the freshly baked cookies so they kept the stylized cherry blossom shape.

We had fun decorating with different colored icing and blingy crystal sugar sparkles. I kept the super big one all for myself. :-9

My Portfolio

I have a lot of projects I've done for my library technical assistant classes and I wanted to show them off in a fun way. I created an online portfolio in scrapblog with pictures, videos, and links to my written projects. This took me about a week to make, working a few hours (or more) a day, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to these creative projects. Leave a comment and tell me what you think!

Twenty Things To Do this Summer

bikesm.jpg
It's so easy to wonder where the summer went. While the days are long and warm I want to make sure I fit in the little things. So here is a list I wrote earlier this month:

  1. Make a mix CD (I used to do this every summer).
  2. Ride my new bike (I've been foiled twice, once by a stuck garage door and then by a flat tire).
  3. Make a flash video (with my toy robot Sakura).
  4. Bake a yummy dessert I've never done before (perhaps crème brûlée cheesecake).
  5. Write a poem.
  6. Write a children's book (based on my Moon Balloon idea).
  7. Create a scrapblog.
  8. Clean out my room (I need to pare down).
  9. Paint my toenails.
  10. Wear my new bikini.
  11. Write encouraging sidewalk notes.
  12. Play a spy game (hopefully with invisible ink).
  13. Make a smoothie with my smoothie blender.
  14. Eat at an outdoor cafe.
  15. Fly a kite or play some Frisbee.
  16. Watch the movies and read the books I already have on the shelf.
  17. Copy files onto portable hard drive (already started!).
  18. Get a haircut.
  19. Make some jewelry.
  20. Work on conversational robot program (this one is kinda tricky).

Oreo Traffic Jam

OREO-small.jpg This morning I was in a traffic jam on my way to work, and later I discovered that it was caused by an overturned semi of double-stuffed oreos! If only I had known, I wouldn't have been so cranky at being late. Um...Got Milk?

MORRIS, Ill. — Police say a trailer loaded with 14 tons of double-stuffed Oreos has overturned, spilling the cookies still in their plastic sleeves into the median and roadway.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Brian Mahoney says the truck's driver was traveling from Chicago to Morris on Interstate 80 around 4 a.m. Monday when he fell asleep at the wheel and slammed into the median.

"The boxes came out of the trailer and boxes were ripped open," he said.

The crash about 50 miles southwest of Chicago remains under investigation.

Mahoney says no charges have been filed but both lanes of traffic remain closed while authorities remove the cookies.

Spring Scents

lilac-blooms.jpg

Spring is in full bloom and I love these warmer days. Green is coming back full force after being almost forgotten over winter and the air smells lovely and clean. Here are some of my favorite spring scents that I try to find.

Lilac was my favorite scent and color when I was in high school and I think my high school boyfriend still associates that scent with me because I wore it so much. When I was little we used to snap off a sprig around this time of year and give them to our teacher. Today I walked around my back yard and noticed that our five lilac bushes were starting to bloom so I stopped and smelled each one.

cherryblossomwet.jpg I fell in love with cherry blossoms when I went to Japan one spring. I know I'm biased because I've never been there any other time, but It has to be the most beautiful time of the year there. Now I really want to go to D.C. for their cherry blossom festival. So far it hasn't coincided well with spring break, but I'll make it work one of these years and bring my bike. I love the original clean and fresh Cherry Blossom scent from Bath and Body Works, although it's so popular that they've rolled out Japanese Cherry Blossom (with a more musky scent) and Blushing Cherry Blossom (with a stronger perfumy/flowery scent) this year.

green_apple.jpg A new scent that I've embraced this spring is green apple. I'm kind of particular about it. Not just any apple scent will do. It has to smell fresh and a little tart. I haven't found it in perfume form yet (but DKNY has one called Be Delicious that might fit the bill). I started using Garnier Fructis shampoo because it has a light green apple smell that I can just wash into my hair and not worry about applying later. Also, it's a little less girly than the flowery scents above.

stormsky.jpgThe last scent is hard to capture. I call it stormy sky but it's that warm rain smell that has a bit of green grass and earth in it. It makes me feel calm but also like something is a bout to happen. A nice rainy afternoon where you might get caught outside, but it's not so bad when the sun comes out and lights up every drop. And, if you're lucky, you might see a rainbow.

My Kawaii Life

Inspired by my green life feature in Domino magazine, I tracked my day, with both my fantasy and reality.

9:04 - Fantasy. Wake up to my robo-kitty alarm clock saying "Rise and shine" in an little cute voice (Think Sumomo from Chobits). Then it reminds me of what I have to do that day, the weather, and anything else I want to know.
Reality. Lico (my calico cat) comes to say good morning, she lays on top of me and purrs. Mmmm... she's warm, so I stay in bed a bit longer. An unreliable but adorable alarm clock.

9:35 - Fantasy. Curl up by a warm fire and drink the fresh brewed chai latte (or a fruit and yogurt smoothie) while munching on almond croissants and getting updates from my robo-kitty.
Reality. It's gray and chilly today so I turn up the heat to over 60 degrees and make warm oatmeal with wheat germ and Smart Balance "buttery spread" made with healthier oils.

9:50 - Fantasy. Do some Yoga or exercise while my robot plays my favorite music or podcasts.
Reality. Turn on the laptop and check email, rss, and say good morning to my friends with desk jobs.

10:17 - Fantasy. Have another yummy chai latte and do a quick update on my blog (since I've caught up on all my email and rss, thanks to robo-kitty).
Reality. Make a cup of chai latte in the microwave. I try to make it taste like Starbuck's, but even with the Tazo chai syrup I can't get it right. Then I read the links my friends send me and send any interesting ones to them. I remember that book I wanted to read, but leave it where it is.

10:48 - Fantasy.
Post some new art I've done too.
Reality. Lolcats make me LOL.

11:03 - Fantasy.
Even though it's my day off I would like to be doing something productive. Like some sort of freelance project or research for writing? Or I get to read from the pile of books I have all over the place (the pre-publication ones I get for free, right? ;) because my blog is so popular...).
Reality. Time to work on my display project due tomorrow for Children's Services class. I'm making a large board game, so I spend a lot of time plotting out the maze on graph paper.

12:25 - Fantasy. Run out in my new Honda Element (please note that in reality my beater car hasn't run in months) and have lunch with my friend Sarah. We get to catch up and show each other what we've been working on, maybe some new sketches. I'd probably eat a nice warm cafe style panini, perhaps chicken and roasted peppers on focaccia from Barnes & Noble.
Reality. Yogurt Break. Hmmm... it was "best by" last week. It smells ok, so I'll take the chance and eat it.

2:06 - Fantasy. I'm back to work on one of my lucrative projects and time is whizzing by. I'm sure Robo-kitty is chiming in with encouragement now and then.
Reality. I'm really hungry now. Time for lunch, a small bit of leftover pasta and breadsticks from the mall.

3:12 - Fantasy. I just put my bike away after taking a quick break to get some fresh air.
Reality. Caught myself spacing out watching World's Most Amazing Videos, so I shut off the tv.

5:00 - Fantasy. Finishing up that project, whatever it is...
Reality. Just finished tracing my library maze onto posterboard from the stencil I made. It took a while, but it really looks neat. Time to get ready for class.

5:50 - Fantasy. I'd like to spend the evening hanging out with some friends, maybe a game night or a movie.
Reality. I have to got to class, but before hand I run into the school bookstore and see that book of riddles and puzzles is on sale, pick it up with some magnets for my board game, and a pack (or two) of Raisinets.

6:02 - Fantasy and Reality match
(If I have to be in class, that is). Class begins, we discussed thesis statements (it's good to know my years of being an English Major can help my classmates write better papers), and later I showed everyone how to play Wii bowling.

8:50 - Fantasy and reality match again.
I sneak in a round of DDR at the end of class (don't you wish you were studying to be a library technical assistant?)

9:35 - Fantasy. I would like to run to visit my boyfriend but,
Reality. I'm too tired and arrive home after driving in the pouring rain, then I change into drier clothes.

10:36 - Fantasy. A little before bedtime reading from my really really needs to go back to the library soon pile.
Reality. Have an after dinner Klondike bar while watching the Colbert Report

11:13 - Fantasy. Write down a list of things to do tomorrow and come up with a great idea for a blog entry. I tell robo-kitty to remind me in the morning and remember to return the library book I just finished.
Reality. I discover cutest fuzzball ever on the internet!

See more funny videos at CollegeHumor

12:29 - Fantasy. Asleep in bed dreaming sweet dreams.
Reality. Finishing watching the Daily Show and typing this up. Time for bed.

As I look back on this entry I realize that, except for a few details, I get to do a lot that I would like. I do wish I could exercise more, see more of my friends, and get some more stuff done. At least on this day I got a lot of work done for school. Of course, having a robo-kitty would be a big improvement!

How to Catch a Mouse in 15 Minutes

As soon as the weather turns cold, a host of creepy crawlies decide that my home is their home. I was scared out of my wits the other day when I looked over and a vicious looking spider strolled by on my pillow. I suppose (if he stuck to the corners) he could spend the winter eating other insects, but that's very little comfort. This weekend the mice started to come (maybe to keep the spiders company?) and I had to act.

Step 1: Realizing I had a Mouse
What tipped me off was the noise. I think the mouse stumbled into a cache of plastic bags. I would like to think my cats would have alerted me, but they casually glanced at the kitchen and went back to sleep. When I went to investigate the noise would immediately stop. I finally saw the mouse trying to lick some dried pasta sauce off the stove (note to self: clean stove!).

Step 2: Setting the Trap
I figured that such a bold mousey would be unable to resist the ultimate bait: a cheezit covered with peanut butter! Two strong smells would surely draw it out and into my simple (but humane) trap that consisted of a plastic box with a flap. I propped the little door open a bit and hoped for the best.

Step 3: Wait 15 Minutes
It was hard to concentrate on my What Not to Wear marathon and stay away from the kitchen, especially when I heard a couple of mouse related noises. After 15 minutes I heard the sound of claws scrabbling against plastic. I had caught a big mouse and it was not taking it quietly!

Step 4: What to Do with the Mouse

I knew that if I just let it go outside it would find its way back into the house. I briefly considered setting it loose in someone else's house next time I went for a visit, but decided to let it go in the country. Now I have to go set up the trap again, in case the mouse had some friends.

Happy Birthday Joss!

Today an average looking guy on the other side of the country is turning 42 and I couldn't be happier about it. Why am I celebrating the birthday of a man I've never met? Joss Whedon has had a remarkable influence on my life just by doing what he believes in and loves for years. He is responsible for my evolution as a fangirl.

It started in 1992 when I was about 12 years old, very shy, and decidedly geeky. There was a movie that was fun and witty and, best of all, it showed a girl kicking butt. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was my introduction to the ideas of Joss. If it had stopped there, I might not even remember his name today; but that's the thing about Joss, he keeps trying for bigger and better things.

A few years later, I got very excited when I heard that a show entitled "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was going to be on TV. I made sure all my friends were going to watch the premiere, so we could talk about it in school the next day. I was part of an online discussion group that ranted and raved about the show. There was a heated discussion about whether Angel would turn out to be a vampire, a werewolf, or something else. All of us positing theories based on the nuances of certain lines of dialogue.

That's when my like of the show, turned into full on love. And I'm not talking about crushing on the likes of David Boreanaz and James Marsters (although thank you Joss for casting such "salty goodness"). I'm talking about having the ability to give into a fantasy for an hour every week, and letting it influence me.

It started out small. I stopped wearing quite so much oversized flannel and washed out jeans. I bought myself a pair of knee-high black patent leather boots (I dubbed them my "Buffy boots") and wore them with cute skirts and eye shadow that matched my outfits. I started to throw around "Buffy speak" in everyday conversation and added "-age" to certain words. I collected a few choice cross necklaces.

Even though I was still kind of shy and self-conscious I tried being braver: I spoke up a little more in class, I tried something new even though I was scared, I threw out a sarcastic remark when somebody was picking on me. The results were mixed and it wasn't all because of one TV show, but the influence was there.

Joss, like the champion he is, stuck with me over the years. I really began to care about what was happening with these characters. I felt for Buffy and the gang when they were troubled, I cried when Buffy had to kill Angel to save the world, and I cheered them on when they kicked demon butt (especially Xander). I tuned in to the spin-off "Angel" to see where the new stories could take me.

Then I left home for college and beyond and didn't have access to a TV for months at a time. I set the VCR at my parents' house and hoped for the best. At first I wasn't sure it was worth the effort, but whenever I started watching an episode it felt like I was getting to hang out with old friends again. Eventually the system fell through and I started losing track of what was going on in the Buffyverse, save a few reruns I caught randomly.

I should have known Joss would sneak back into my life, but it caught me by surprise. I was at a video store one night and I saw "Firefly" sitting on the shelf. I had heard about the show and knew Joss had done it, but without regular access to a TV I had missed its short run. I rented all four DVDs and spent the next three days watching episodes whenever I wasn't at school or work.

"Firefly" is epic and excellent. I joined in the growing legions of fans, called Browncoats, that were screaming: "Why did this show get cancelled?" I bought the DVD, showed it to my friends, and then they bought it and showed it to their friends. Then I heard something that made my little heart sing, Joss was making a movie as a continuation of "Firefly". It was named after the ship, Serenity.

I hunted and begged to get tickets to one of the pre-screenings and after two failed attempts I finally succeeded and was sitting in a theatre with other fans. Before the movie there was a message from Joss to his fans. His voice was heartfelt and full of a certain gravity. In his speech were these words, which have become a rallying cry for fans everywhere, "We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty." I almost cried I was so touched. In fact, I kind of teared up just typing that phrase. Just get the Serenity DVD, it's one of the special features, and you'll see what I mean.

That's what Joss does. He touches people with his stories. He engenders an almost unreasonable amount of love and admiration from his fans. There is even a documentary being made about how fans helped Serenity get made, called Done The Impossible. Fans everywhere support him with shirts, websites, and even songs that are a tribute to the man they call Joss. Joss Whedon is probably responsible for me meeting a certain number of my friends through fandoms and websites for Browncoats.

This weekend, all around the country, fans have come together to support the movie Serenity by holding charity screenings to benefit Equality Now. It's a great birthday gift for Joss and it's how I will be celebrating. Recently Joss was honored by Equality Now and asked to give a speech. With his humor and heartfelt gravity he answered the question, "Why do you write such strong women characters?"

This year I bought the complete Chosen collection of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", all seven seasons. I finally saw all that I missed and how it all ended. I realized that I really did miss Buffy and empathized with her struggle with life. She went to emotional places that many adults go through, realistic places with flawed relationships that are entirely messed up. The show is a continuous comfort and I pop in the musical episode anytime I'm feeling down. Sometimes I smile just remembering the question, "What would Buffy Do?" and part of me hopes that some characters will not fade away and still have more stories to tell.

Thank you Joss. Thank you for creating characters and stories that allow me to fall and fall deep. Thank you for showing how people can surprise you again and again. Thank you for being realistic enough to admit that life is hard and sometimes the choices you are given suck. Thank you for being creative enough to come up with new choices. Thank you for having the courage to kill to make great stories, and having the mercy to redeem lost souls.

I'm just one girl, but I'm not the only one who admires and respects Joss Whedon. I'm not the only one who wants to thank him. I sincerely hope he can fathom how he has touched so many lives so deeply. Happy Birthday Joss, here's hoping for many more years with you in my life.

Free Chicago

The city is bursting with secrets. They echo off steel and glass, swirl around corners, and nestle under sidewalks. To hear these windy whispers you need only show up on May 19-21 at 224 South Michigan Avenue.

Next month the Great Chicago Places and Spaces weekend offers dozens of free, guided tours throughout the city. Tours are conducted by accomplished authors, architects, historians and more. Let these secret keepers open your eyes to all that the city is coveting.

A few select tours require advance registration but the majority are booked on a first come, first serve basis the day that they occur. Hidden Spaces, Secret Places is one of the first tours to fill up because it explores places that are usually off limits in public buildings and private rooftop gardens.

I suggest arriving very early if you have your heart set on a certain tour, at least an hour or more before the doors open. If you can't bear to wake up early, just show up when you're ready (although I still suggest before noon) and see what tours are still open and you will have a surprising and exciting time. Even if you get tickets you must arrive at the designated meeting location on time or the tour will leave without you, as I sadly discovered last year when I was late for a foundry tour (which isn't offered again this year).

Discover neighborhoods based on ethnicity (Chinese, Greek, Arab), geography (Pullman, Pilsen, Bronzeville, Bucktown, Lincoln Park, Gold Coast), or even coffee (East Roger's Park Caffeinated Tour ending at the Heartland Cafe).

Chicago has one of the best skylines in the world and a portion of the tours focus on skyscrapers and downtown. Last year I went on walking tours of Historic Skyscrapers and examples of Downtown Deco. In a fun twist for bi-linguals some tours will be conducted in Italian, German, or French with focus on how each culture has influenced the city.

One of the most popular tours is the Architectural River Cruise, but there are a myriad of fun ways to cruise the city sights. Besides trolley tours there are bike tours, tours on the "El", a tour of a submarine, and Segways on the Lakefront.

Legacy of the Plan of Chicago is a grand tour that shows how the city has evolved from what was planned a century ago. There are other tours with more specific historical significance that tell of the great Chicago fire or study Frank Lloyd Wrights Prairie homes or Frank Ghery's gems.

Ever wonder how the city works? There are tours that go into bridges, train stations, and even under the Millennium Park Crown Fountain that shows how the spitting video sculpture operates.

For pop culture enthusiasts like myself there are multiple tours that show how Chicago is portrayed through the lens of a video camera: Director's Cut: Tour of Landmark Movie Locations, Lights, Camera, Architecture!, Chicago On Screen, and the NBC 5 Studio. If you like to being behind the camera there are two tours that focus on Loop Photography on both Michigan Ave and Wacker Dr.

Chicago is rich with arts and culture and there are tours that go into places like the Oriental Theatre where the musical Wicked is currently playing. One tour will be exploring some of my favorite Sculpture in the Loop. Others explore gardens, cemeteries, churches and there is even a Stained Glass tour.

Finally some tours just sound incredibly fun like Chicago's Haunted Spaces where ghost stories are told. See how cheesecake is made (and grab a free sample) at Eli's Cheesecake Factory. Let improv performers show you their favorite places in the Second City Neighborhood Tour.

Most of these tours are too lengthy and fact filled for small children, but there is a Lego Event led by architects in which everyone can create urbanscapes.

Why should tourists have all the fun? Too many people live around the city and only see Chicago from certain viewpoints: their neighborhood, the building they work in, favorite spots, and tourist traps downtown. Let the Great Chicago Places and Spaces weekend show you the city you never knew.

To find more information and a complete list of tours go to www.cityofchicago.org/specialevents and click on the Great Chicago Places and Spaces icon. If for some reason the weekend of May 19-21 is impossible for you there is a link to a couple of other tours that operate at different times of year, but they aren't free.

Dating Mad Libs

I recently tried to start dating again. My first real date was a while ago with a guy who seemed very nice and funny, much to my relief. We had a good date (with fun, laughter, and some appropriate arm touching) and got along great.

At the end of the date we hugged goodbye and I said something like, "I'll see you later." He replied with one of his standard phrases, "I hope so." So I stop getting into my car, turn to him and say "Don't hope. If you want to see me again, call me and ask me out on a date."

He says something along the lines of: I will, there will definately be another date.

I took that as a good sign. Gee, how could I not?

When I got home, he was online so I said I got home alright and thanked him again for the date. He replied with a nice "Your Welcome" and then we both said good night.

Yeah, can you guess where this is going yet? He didn't call. He didn't email. He never IMed me again and was only online in away mode or he would pop on and then dissapear...

Some of my friends said he didn't call because I was probably bitchy or mean to him (who me?). Others said that's just how guys are, but I don't buy that. In any event, I feel like the guy should have the guts to tell me how he feels one way or another. I have a real problem with people who don't say what they mean.

I was mad after about 5 days, after a week I turned more zen. I mean, I obviously don't want to date a guy who can't follow through on a simple phone call. So I was checking my email and I see that although the little smiley next to his email address indicates he is online, my chat program does not... So, being the confrontational type girl that I am, I write him an email. Here it is:

Hey [name witheld to protect the jerky],
Since it's been two weeks since our date I wanted to let you know again that I had a nice time and thought you were great. I also wanted to let you know that there are way cooler ways of blowing me off that don't include hiding from me every time you jump online. Letting me know that you don't want to go out again is really ok. It's really easy too! All you have to do is call, email, IM, or text me with an appropriate message.

Sample message: "Hey, It was cool meeting you, but I don't think you're the one for me. Thanks for taking the time to meet me and good luck."

You could even do it mad libs style: "Hey, It was ______ (adjective) meeting you, but ______________ (excuse). Thanks for __________ (something) and ________ (parting words).

Sample message: "Hey, It was only slightly creepy meeting you, but I hope to never see your ugly face again. Thanks for not killing me and stuffing me behind some wall and I've filed a restraining order."

See how easy and fun it can be?! I hope in the future you can man up and let a woman know how you feel right away. It is the kind, polite, gentlemanly, and right thing to do. Ask any girl you know.
Sincerely,
Coral

I know I should have just written him off, but I figure maybe he'll be nicer to the next girl.
