Hey, have you seen the commercial for that new tv series, Scarlet? I love a kick butt heroine and it has that cute nerdy guy from C.S.I.:NY, A.J. Buckley.
Cool. So what is it about?
It's by the guy who created Supernatural and Smallville, so it's going to be good.
But what is it about?
Um...
That's pretty much what I discovered when I went to look up information on Scarlet. Even when I went to the official website, I couldn't find any plot or backstory. So who is Scarlet, the elusive star with a mysterious smile?
She's a virus. And no, not in a cool Terminator android kind of way. She is part of a viral marketing ploy to sell LG XCanvas Scarlett LCD TVs a "series" of five tvs that cost between $1500+ for the 32 inch to almost $5300 for the 52 inch. Thats over $100 an inch for all you mathimatical types. Her red eye seems to indicate some infrared technology.
For more proof just check out the subliminal advertising spotted by some attentive youtubers:
00:16 - "We're going to put her in every home in the planet"
00:21 - "What do you mean she's going to change TV forever?"
00:49 - "The evidence is staring you in the face"
00:54 - "Things aren't always what they seem" i.e., this is not a real tv show
00:28 - Notice the tv behind the actress
While it seems to be a decent viral marketing campaign, I can't help but think quite a few people are going to feel cheated when, instead of a new tv show airing on monday, they find out that Scarlet is another expensive tv. I suppose some will be struck by the cleverness of the ad, but after a long writer's strike is it really a good idea to tease the many people that are clamoring for new shows?
Inspired by my green life feature in Domino magazine, I tracked my day, with both my fantasy and reality.
9:04 - Fantasy. Wake up to my robo-kitty alarm clock saying "Rise and shine" in an little cute voice (Think Sumomo from Chobits). Then it reminds me of what I have to do that day, the weather, and anything else I want to know. Reality. Lico (my calico cat) comes to say good morning, she lays on top of me and purrs. Mmmm... she's warm, so I stay in bed a bit longer. An unreliable but adorable alarm clock.
9:35 - Fantasy. Curl up by a warm fire and drink the fresh brewed chai latte (or a fruit and yogurt smoothie) while munching on almond croissants and getting updates from my robo-kitty. Reality. It's gray and chilly today so I turn up the heat to over 60 degrees and make warm oatmeal with wheat germ and Smart Balance "buttery spread" made with healthier oils.
9:50 - Fantasy. Do some Yoga or exercise while my robot plays my favorite music or podcasts. Reality. Turn on the laptop and check email, rss, and say good morning to my friends with desk jobs.
10:17 - Fantasy. Have another yummy chai latte and do a quick update on my blog (since I've caught up on all my email and rss, thanks to robo-kitty). Reality. Make a cup of chai latte in the microwave. I try to make it taste like Starbuck's, but even with the Tazo chai syrup I can't get it right. Then I read the links my friends send me and send any interesting ones to them. I remember that book I wanted to read, but leave it where it is.
10:48 - Fantasy. Post some new art I've done too. Reality.Lolcats make me LOL.
11:03 - Fantasy. Even though it's my day off I would like to be doing something productive. Like some sort of freelance project or research for writing? Or I get to read from the pile of books I have all over the place (the pre-publication ones I get for free, right? ;) because my blog is so popular...). Reality. Time to work on my display project due tomorrow for Children's Services class. I'm making a large board game, so I spend a lot of time plotting out the maze on graph paper.
12:25 - Fantasy. Run out in my new Honda Element (please note that in reality my beater car hasn't run in months) and have lunch with my friend Sarah. We get to catch up and show each other what we've been working on, maybe some new sketches. I'd probably eat a nice warm cafe style panini, perhaps chicken and roasted peppers on focaccia from Barnes & Noble. Reality. Yogurt Break. Hmmm... it was "best by" last week. It smells ok, so I'll take the chance and eat it.
2:06 - Fantasy. I'm back to work on one of my lucrative projects and time is whizzing by. I'm sure Robo-kitty is chiming in with encouragement now and then. Reality. I'm really hungry now. Time for lunch, a small bit of leftover pasta and breadsticks from the mall.
3:12 - Fantasy. I just put my bike away after taking a quick break to get some fresh air. Reality. Caught myself spacing out watching World's Most Amazing Videos, so I shut off the tv.
5:00 - Fantasy. Finishing up that project, whatever it is... Reality. Just finished tracing my library maze onto posterboard from the stencil I made. It took a while, but it really looks neat. Time to get ready for class.
5:50 - Fantasy. I'd like to spend the evening hanging out with some friends, maybe a game night or a movie. Reality. I have to got to class, but before hand I run into the school bookstore and see that book of riddles and puzzles is on sale, pick it up with some magnets for my board game, and a pack (or two) of Raisinets.
6:02 - Fantasy and Reality match (If I have to be in class, that is). Class begins, we discussed thesis statements (it's good to know my years of being an English Major can help my classmates write better papers), and later I showed everyone how to play Wii bowling.
8:50 - Fantasy and reality match again. I sneak in a round of DDR at the end of class (don't you wish you were studying to be a library technical assistant?)
9:35 - Fantasy. I would like to run to visit my boyfriend but, Reality. I'm too tired and arrive home after driving in the pouring rain, then I change into drier clothes.
10:36 - Fantasy. A little before bedtime reading from my really really needs to go back to the library soon pile. Reality. Have an after dinner Klondike bar while watching the Colbert Report
11:13 - Fantasy. Write down a list of things to do tomorrow and come up with a great idea for a blog entry. I tell robo-kitty to remind me in the morning and remember to return the library book I just finished. Reality. I discover cutest fuzzball ever on the internet!
12:29 - Fantasy. Asleep in bed dreaming sweet dreams. Reality. Finishing watching the Daily Show and typing this up. Time for bed.
As I look back on this entry I realize that, except for a few details, I get to do a lot that I would like. I do wish I could exercise more, see more of my friends, and get some more stuff done. At least on this day I got a lot of work done for school. Of course, having a robo-kitty would be a big improvement!
I just discovered these videos of the adorable Capucine, a little French girl whose mother is becoming a regular videographer. In these episodes, Capucine has eaten too much candy and is afraid her dad will find out. She hides out under a counter and brainstorms with her mother on what to tell him. The second video has the "outtakes" that are just as cute as the edit Capucha initially posts.
If you look at all of Capucha's videos, she starts out like anyone does with a new video camera and takes short videos of her cats and kids doing cute stuff. The more she plays the more sophisticated the videos get with editing, effects and music. It really is what having a video camera is all about.
This is for my guy, who was only slightly offended when I described his Wii Boxing technique as "a kitten batting at invisible fairies." Just remember that he still beats me every time we box against each other.
On Sunday morning, my boyfriend and I waited in line to get him a Nintendo Wii and I put down a deposit on a Wii Fit board. Almost 20 years ago, I had an original Nintendo but I wasn't very good at the more complicated games and my brothers played it more than I did. After playing the Wii exactly once, I am now a burgeoning gamer.
The controls were intuitive and easy to use and I enjoyed the Wii Sports games more than I thought I would. I played bowling, tennis, and boxing and actually worked up a sweat. Tennis was easy with basic serving, forehands, and backhands. Bowling had a tiny learning curve to get the speed right and I ended up having ridiculous spares that were impossible to get.
Boxing was my absolute favorite. I watched my boyfriend go a couple of rounds and he has developed this boxing style that looks remarkably like a kitten batting at invisible fairies. It works great though, and he gets the K.O.s. I take a more visceral approach and bob and weave and punch until I'm flailing around. It's a bit less effective, but I really got some exercise.
The Wii also has news, local weather, and the ability to go online, which strikes me as a great way to start my morning before I officially turn on the computer. We ended our intro to the Wii by making our avatars called Miis. I made his and he ended up looking tough and evil. He made mine with happy eyes and smile, and a purple shirt (I know, we are an adorably cute couple).
Now I can't wait for the Fit to come out. It's two months from now! Not only does it have the exercise games, it has a tightrope walking game, a hula hoop game, and a soccer goalie game. It all looks like good fun, although I'll probably have to get in shape so I don't hurt myself with all this interactive gaming.
